Important news from Little League about Composite bats

From Little League:
SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (Dec. 30, 2010) - Little League International has placed a moratorium on the use of composite bats in the Little League (Majors) Division and all other baseball divisions of Little League, effective immediately.

"Today's decision of the Little League International Board of Directors Executive Committee is based on scientific research data from the University of Massachusetts (Lowell), which was contracted by Little League Baseball," Stephen D. Keener, President and Chief Executive Officer of Little League Baseball and Softball, said. "The maximum performance standard for non-wood bats in the divisions for 12-year-olds and below is a Bat Performance Factor (BPF) of 1.15. The research found that composite bats, while they may meet the standard when new, can exceed that standard after a break-in process."

Junior league (13+) does have a few exceptions:
Approved Composites bats for Juniors

At present, no composite bats for the Little League (Majors) Division and below have received a waiver. If and when any models do receive a waiver, Little League International will inform its leagues of that decision.

Registrations will be at Mellow Mushroon for Spring 2011

Oakleaf is joining Little League

I recently learned that Oakleaf is moving from Cal Ripken to Little League. This is great news for doing some inter league play for our older Junior league.

They have fields (of course) and could also offer some inter league options with Majors.

It's good to have another Little League in Clay County.

Fleming Island Sports Complex Phase I complete in 2015

In case you were wondering what the timeline is for the new Sports Complex, the current Clay County budget breaks down the timeline and budget for getting the project completed.

Construction and Budget for Fleming Island Sports Complex

If you look at the full budget this is page 457 of the 500 page report.

It is good to see a timeline although I am sure we are all anxious to see it completed.  Let's all keep an eye on this and make sure the funds do not get moved which has happened in the past.

Here is the layout of the new park: Fleming Island Sports Complex Baseball Fields

FILL and FIAA Update

Just to keep everyone updated, after we met with FIAA and got into the details of how the 2 leagues would come together, the FILL Officers have decided to not dissolve FILL, but rather extend an offer to affiliate with FIAA. Basically, aligning where it makes sense.

We believe that baseball is unique and autonomous enough to warrant a seperate entity. You can find examples where Athletic Associations have combined programs, but there are just as many if not more programs that manage baseball as a separate program. I believe most Little Leagues in Jacksonville are solely baseball and softball and not part of a combined program association.

The affiliation agreement we have offered FIAA allows us to work together with events and projects where we have a shared interest.

I will keep you all informed on how FIAA responds to our offer.
